This project is not about business, but passion. Eventually, also the desktop version should access GAIA data, but we lack the resources to do everything at the same time. But GAIA has brought no new/better data for the brightest stars (those that we actually observe with the naked eye). Now it's GAIA, and new programs should of course use it. When Stellarium was started, Hipparcos was the best data. Stellarium Web has been started about 17 years after Stellarium. A program running in a web browser and permanently accessing online resources is necessarily different from a desktop program.
